Controlled Vocabulary 是由各领域知识的实践社群成员同意的词彙集,用来正确传达该领域资讯,须包含词彙定义、词彙之间的关係。

xAPI statement 使用的动词 (Verbs) 、活动类型 (Activity Types)、扩充词(Extensions Keys) 应该尽量使用已存在的限制词语彙,先查找限制词注册表(Registry),若无适用者才向 CoP 申请註册新增。

限制词并不在 xAPI 规範中。xAPI 规範仅保證语法结构上的互操作性(structural data interoperability),必须透过限制词的管理才能保證语彙语义上的互操作性(semantic interoperability),ADL 采用 w3id.org 服务 (隶属於 W3C 标準委员会) 来建立限制词注册表(Registry) 与说明网页 IRL; 当设计师或程式开发者须确定某词彙精确含意,它们可以连到该词彙本身的网址(IRL)页面查看解释,这网址也是该词彙的独特识别码(id)。

A controlled vocabulary is a restricted, agreed-on list of words or terms developed by a CoP and used for a specific domain of knowledge. The objective of a controlled vocabulary is to ensure consistency in the development and implementation of xAPI statements to avoid ambiguity and ensure the use of consistent language (ADL, 2014).

According to Hedden (2010), a controlled vocabulary is a restricted list of words or terms used for labeling, indexing, or categorizing information. It is controlled as only the specified terms from the list may be used for the subject or domain area covered by the controlled vocabulary. It is also controlled because there is control over who adds, updates, or removes terms in the list.
